John Proctor, Hero or Stooge?

Who is John Proctor? Some people view him as a hero who is brave and others might see him as a stooge. With evidence from the novel, it can be concluded that Proctor is a hero.

Proctor shows characteristics of a hero in my opinion because he is distinct. He isn't an ordinary guy in this society. He tells Paris straight up that he doesn't like him and doesn't mind what others might think of him. This is a hero like quality because it takes courage and bravery to stand up for yourself and for what you believe. Proctor also shows qualities of a hero because he stood up against the girls at court and told the judge that they were all lying. This is a serious case, since these girls can end up having critical consequences. On top of that he confessed that he had performed adultery with Abigail, one of the girls. This violated one of the commandments and he knew he would be punished, but he had enough courage to say the truth. He was sacrificing his life just to have his wife set free from jail. Once again he is a hero because he was selfless, brave, had courage and was determined to prove all these girls were just a bunch of phonies.

In my eyes, Proctor is a hero. He realizes all the things going on in the society and tried to stand up for it. He didn't go along with everyone else, and wasn't hesitant to call it how it was. All he can do now is just hope things turn out well, but even if they don't, he would have seen it coming anyways.

  1. I agree with you completely on the fact that John Proctor is a Hero, however, what I wonder is, would John have spoke up about the incident had his wife not been involved?
